Royal Canin USA has no confirmed cases of melamine related illness in pets eating Sensible Choice and Kasco products affected by this recall. Last month, Royal Canin USA announced it will no longer use any Chinese vegetable protein suppliers. The following eight Sensible Choice dry dog food products and seven Kasco dry dog and cat food products with date codes between July 28, 2006 to April 30, 2007 are being voluntarily recalled:Royal Canin is owned by Mars Petfood and has expanded globally, with their U.S. plants being located in Missouri and South Dakota. While their international expansion doesn’t automatically mean their food lacks quality, it is generally more difficult to guarantee anything from pet food manufacturers once their production reaches such a scale. It takes a lot for big companies to manage their bottom line and suppliers compete with the lowest possible prices for a piece of the pie. Although Royal Canin does assert that their ingredients are tested for quality, they aren’t forthcoming about where the ingredients are coming from or what they are being tested for. It makes one a little less comfortable when places of origin start to get rather murky and information is not available. The pet food recall has swelled dramatically since the FDA first announced the discovery in late March of melamine in wheat gluten added to wet foods manufactured by Menu Foods, a Canadian-based company that makes "cuts-and-gravy"-style chow for many product lines —from premium brands like Iams to generics, such as Food Lion. This past week, Wilbur-Ellis, a San Francisco-based company that imports ingredients for feed, told the FDA, that it had received a pink bag with the word "melamine" stenciled on it in a shipment of rice protein concentrate; the rice gluten shipment, which subsequently tested positive for the toxin, came from its Chinese supplier Binzhou Futian Biology Technology Co., Ltd. (The tainted wheat gluten came from another Chinese supplier, Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Company. The manufacturer Royal Canin South Africa, a subsidiary of the French pet nutrition company Royal Canin, also announced last week that it had discovered melamine in corn gluten that it received from an undisclosed Chinese supplier. The food manufactured with that ingredient is now implicated in the deaths of at least 30 dogs in two weeks, according to the South African Veterinary Association.
