Canned Cat Food - Stews Grain Free - Newman's Own
One of my 4 cats has recently been diagnosed with diabetes. They have ALL been on dry food their entire life. I had never thought that dry food would be as bad as it is. I was told by a vet when I was younger that "wet food will kill your cats stomach. It's horrible. Only feed him dry food." That cat ended up having mega colon.
So here I am with one cat that has been diagnosed with diabetes and another that had major kidney issues when she was younger.
Before I put my cat on insulin I want to change his, and the rest, to a wet food diet. After reading all of the problems associated with dry food I can no longer give them dry food. SO over the next few weeks I'm going to try and switch them over. Last night I let them all get a sample of Newman's Own Organic wet cat food. The seemed to enjoy it a good deal. This morning one was hesitant, the healthiest cat of the bunch. He licked it and ate a few chunks but seemed a bit disinterested. He did eat a bit more of it last night though. I'm guessing he'll be harder to switch over.
Does anybody have any experience with Newman's Own Organic? I saw it at the store and bought a few cans to try out.
Does anybody have a good link for feeding your cats home cooked meals? I've read people talk about raw and home cooked meals but I cant seem to find any sites that have recipes to get started.
Any help would be appreciated. Newman's own cat food is one of the organic pet food offerings from Newman's Own Organics. It is available in both wet canned and dry formula versions. Hi, and welcome. Could we know your name and your cat's name? So much more personal that way - LOL.
First, Newman's own is apparantly lower in protein than some, but high in fat, and low in carbs, but I would strongly urge you to do the math yourself. From the label, add the protein, fat, moisture, fiber and ash, subtract from 100 - that's the wet matter carbs. Moisture should be around 78%, so take the difference from 100 (22 if the moisture is 78) and divide that into the wet matter carbs. That will give you carbs on a dry matter basis. Cats need both protein and fat, but most foods have more protein than fat - Newman's seems to have it backwards.
I'm confused when you say your other cat had kidney problems when she was younger - does she not still have them? I don't believe I've ever heard of kidney problems resolving, unless you mean just crystals or stones. Wet food will cure that in a hurry.
One of the best recipes for raw food (don't cook it) is Dr Lisa is a vet, and there is a lot of good info on her site. You can also buy Felines Pride, made by Shelby, one of our members. It is the best ready made raw on the market, with no grains or veggies, no antibiotics and no preservatives, but with all the supplements your cats need.
Why are you waiting to put him on insulin? What we see, over and over, is that with a combo of insulin and diet, early DX cats go off insulin within weeks, so it's worth trying. What was his blood sugar (BG) at the vet at DX? And are you hometesting? This is probably your best weapon against this disease. By testing at home, you know how his BG is reacting to food change, how much insulin to give, and how he is reacting to the insulin. If you are not testing, we can help you learn. And if you tell us what part of the country you are in, we may have a member close enough to show you how to do it.Organic, high-grade ingredients. Newman's Own says all of its pet foods are more than 70 percent organic and use only "human-grade" ingredients. Some experts say cat food really shouldn't contain any grain because cats haven't evolved to digest it well, but organic brown rice, followed by oat bran, are pretty far down on the ingredient list, appearing after organic chicken, water, poultry liver and ocean whitefish. Carrageenan, a seaweed-based thickener that's controversial in some experts' eyes, is the only other question mark on the ingredients list.
