For a single cat, I think the monthly cost can be about $70.
Brings a mobile unit (NOMAD) to the area every month for low cost s/n of cats.
As I said, this all adds up to about $4,550 in vet- and health-related bills in just under three years. The remaining grand was spent on travel to and from the vet and/or general cat things, like kitty litter, generic dry cat food, cat bed, scratching post, things like that. Fun fact: $1,000 over 36 months actually comes out to $27/month, which is pretty much what I initially guessed, way back in 2009, when I was predicting how much owning a cat would cost me. Sigh.
Cats really are not that expensive as long as you get a healthy one that does not end up with a lot of medical problems. For one cat, a 5 pound bag of cat food should be sufficient for a week. You can buy a good brand for about $ 10 a bag. I disagree with the poster who only feed her cat canned food. It is not good for their gums and some cats gets really sick from it. Dry food is cheaper and is actually better for them. If you get a short hair cat like the american short hair, then you will not have to take it to the groomer. Kitty litter is usually about 15 and that would last you a month. Long hair cats like a persian will require grooming once or twice a month. I have a pomeranian and her visits cost $ 30 including a tip for the groomer. I can’t imagine it costing more than that. As long as the cat has not health problems, a visit to the vet once or twice a year should be good. You shouldn’t end up spending more than 120 on vet bills, so on average 12 a month. I think you could afford a healthy cat (American short hair) for about 60 to 70 a month.

When considering actual costs, the inconvenience of twice daily pilling a cat for life, adverse effects of the medications, progressive cardiomyopathy that we can’t resolve with medicine, and considering we are merely suppressing the disease and not curing it, medical management is rarely the best option for treating hyperthyroidism. Medical management may be the best choice in cats with concurrent life threatening diseases (e.g. cancer, severe renal disease) and whose life expectancy is short, hence the cost of therapy may not be justified for a few months of life.
