If you are concerned with the residue on the coat, especially if you have small children in the home, or cats, which may lick the residue off of the treated dog, you might want to try going with an oral medication. Also, never use a flea and tick topical preventive product that is labeled for a dog on a cat or vice versa.

Oral preventatives are also more convenient for many people. Unlike topical flea preventatives, oral treatments are easy to administer and won't create a sticky mess. The oral medications are available in either a beef-flavored tablet or soft chew. Many pets will eat these medications like treats, making it easy to give them their monthly dose of flea prevention. If you choose , your dog will be protected against fleas and ticks for up to 12 weeks!Protecting your dog from harmful fleas and ticks has never been so easy! NexGard is a brand new, revolutionary flea and tick preventative from the makers of Frontline®, the #1 choice of veterinarians. It's the first flea and tick killer of its kind because it comes in a yummy, beef-flavored soft chew that protects your dog from a flea and tick infestation for a full 30 days. That means, you don't have to worry anymore about messy topicals, or accidentally washing your dog's preventative off while bathing! Also, it can be taken alongside your dog's heartworm medication, without interruption. NexGard keeps your pet protected from adult fleas by killing them before they have a chance to lay eggs, which reduces the possibility of a flea infestation. Plus, it kills 3 types of ticks (the American dog tick, the black-legged (Deer) tick and the Lone Star tick) which decreases the risk of your pet developing a deadly tick-borne disease. NexGard requires a prescription from your veterinarian. After giving your dog Bravecto, the medication quickly reaches tissue fluids under your dog's skin. When fleas and ticks feed on your dog, they ingest Bravecto and die. Bravecto kills fleas, prevents flea infestations and kills ticks (black-legged tick (a.k.a. deer tick), American dog tick, and brown dog tick) for 12 weeks. Bravecto also kills lone star ticks for 8 weeks.Choose the right formula for your pet’s weight. An EPA investigation showed that small dogs (10 to 20 pounds) were most likely to have reactions such as rashes, vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures from topical treatments. Dogs that are old, young, sick, or on meds are also at higher risk. (Flea and tick control can interfere with other medications, rendering them ineffective or even poisonous.) There are even breed-specific sensitivities, so a conversation with your vet is in order before you decide how to proceed.
