Over the ensuing weeks, Duca, founder of the Feline Community Network, a Hobart-based cat rescue group, was able to take two of the sickest kittens to a local veterinarian for treatment. Porter County Animal Control got involved a few weeks ago because of a complaint, and the woman told them she was working with Duca to try to get the cats medical care, have them spayed and neutered, and placed in homes.
Liz Smith, of the Hobart Humane Society, holds one of 33 cats that were removed from the home of a local woman over the past two weeks. The Humane Society has arranged for the adoption of 10 of the cats. "They're all friendly," Smith said.

Hobart police Sgt. Ronald Russo, the code enforcement officer, said he was called to Sichtermann's home in late March with a complaint that she was feeding stray cats. He said there were plates she used to feed the cats blowing around the neighborhood and in the nearby stream.Police, Scheidt and staff from the Humane Society of Hobart arrived at Cundiff's home armed with a search warrant on Jan. 21. The house had a strong ammonia smell and cats were roaming all through the house and basement. Some hid in the rafters and were difficult to retrieve. A couple had open sores and some had difficulty breathing.Duca doesn't normally take in strays or cats surrendered at her Hobart location, but she does provide a safe and comfortable home for what she calls "community cats," ones that have been cast aside by their owners, are injured or starving, until they're adopted.Thelma Hickman (nee Brown), age 74, a lifelong resident of Hobart, IN passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, March 10, 2014 surrounded by her close friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Leonard, in 2011; her parents, Forest (Brownie) and Jane Brown. She graduated from Merrillville High School, received her BA from Ball State University and her Master’s Degree from Indiana State University. Thelma was a 2nd and 3rd grade teacher for over 30 years in the Merrillville School System. She was an avid cat lover and her cat Willie was at her side when she passed. Thelma volunteered after her retirement at the Independent Cat Society and also at her church helping wherever she could be of service.
